In the "I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it department" Hutchinson has officially launched "3" its 3G mobile telephone network in the UK. Here's the catch. There are no phones yet and there won't be any until next month. This has overtones of the tree in the forest riddle. If a mobile operator switches on a network but no-one has a handset, does anyone notice? [BBC News | Technology | UK Edition]

China is aiming to be the third spacefaring nation with an ambitious plan to send probes to the moon. So far no manned missions are planned but if the Chinese government approves the Chang'e project - named after a Chinese fairytale - then sometime between 2005 and 2010, China will send probes to the moon including one to collect and return soil samples to Earth. I've changed the layout of this 'blog ever so slightly. I'm still having difficulty getting to grips with Userland. I've updated the blogroll but even though the XML code says one thing, it bears no relationship to what's actually displayed. Oh well, I'll just have to keep trying
