Irish readers may remember the brou-ha-ha a few months ago when it was revealed that the Savoy Cinema in Dublin's O'Connell Street was forced by ComReg to disconnect the mobile phone jammer it had installed in one of its theatres. The management argued that they were merely trying to ensure that moviegoers could enjoy their evening out without the annoyance of mobile phones.
Now, however, it seems that hoteliers in Scotland are using the same technology but for less altruistic reasons. ZDNet UK reports in this story that they are using the jammers to give the erroneous impression that there is no mobile phone coverage in the area so that customers have not option bu to use the in-room system, with the associated markup of course.
