Could this be the beginning of the end for the Intel/Microsfot special relationship? Microsoft has announced its new Xbox consoles due out in 2005 will use IBM's family of processors. The only family of processors IBM has is the PowerPC, the same chip that's in the Mac. Interesting times ahead.

It looks like the Irish Labour Party has called for major security fears to be addressed before electronic voting machines are used for next year's local and European elections. As I've said before, my inner geek likes the idea of electronic voting but I have become very wary of the idea following revelations in the US about the security of the machines.

Minister Martin Cullen has dismissed Labour's calls saying that the machines have been tested by six different consultants. However, the software is still proprietary and cannot be evaluated by the general public - or at least those members of the general public who have the expertise. In Australia, on the other hand, the government has gone for an open-source solution with the software publicly available and open to scrutiny.
