Medical Informatics - Understanding Its Culture

At a recent town meeting held at Columbia University Dept. of Medical Informatics, featured President-Elect of the American Medical Informatics Assoc. (AMIA) Charles Safran, MD. Several of the members related their stories of interactions with clinicians unaware of the role played researchers in this discipline in developing standards including HIPAA. Part of the hope of enabling technologies such as wireless networks is to help establish, instruct and enliven communities of healthcare professionals, in order to work more efficiently toward solving clinical, technological and administrative problems. Downtowns, including San Diego's "Bandwidth Bay" are seeking more public interest by establishing hotspots. The professionals in the blog world talk about technology changing or creating social organizations mainly in the context in communities achieving better means of communication.

Certainly blogs and wireless can serve the communities of healthcare professionals who enjoy sharing their experiences. The issue of having access to "experts" in a discipline is debated among the pro bloggers including David Weinberger.
