HANDHELDS

HIPAA Issues with Handhelds

Multiple factors must be considered when implementing any network that includes sharing "protected health information" (PHI). A whitepaper on this at the Palm site addresses these. Basically, it comes down to encryption and/or password protection. You may think that just because you use a browser to access PHI, this is cleared once the unit is turned off. But even the smallest browsers, use some sort of caching, and caught potential cause problems if the handheld is misplaced or stolen. Other issues, including beaming, PDA repairs and sync'ing with unprotected PC's must also be taken into consideration.

GENERAL WI-FI

Wireless Walker in Times Square

Here was my view from Times Square, NYC last night. This was the shot I was trying to create just to prove that the new Verizon hot spots were easy enough to access to allow this.

I started off at Battery Park (southern tip of Manhattan), and worked my way past the Verizon store across from Bryant Park, to Times Square.

Bottom line: you can get decent wireless web access (>500 Kbps), to which you can reliably connect. However, you must be a Verizon dial-up or DSL subscriber. However, for the price of a McDonald's extra-value meal (or $3 for access only), you can browse the web for 1 hour utilizing their hot spot set up by Cometa. And of course, you have the Starbucks option (who don't need this mention, but allowed me to plug in my laptop to recharge the batteries. Thanks.)

JOHO, the blog

This experiment is meant to demonstrate again the robustness of this technology. It's also the show the possibilities of mobile blogging. The idea is that you stay connected to your community, sharing your experiences with others with similar interests or those who are just curious and want to lurk.

As the average person begins to use these public hot spots, demand will increase. (For the whole narrative, you can click on the title above or here.)

Speaking of public spaces, David Weinberger's blog examines the continuing emergence of web communities.
