BLOGOSPHERE

Dynamism: Weblogs Engage Complexity

Most blogs have "What is a blog?" link, for those who stumble onto a blog whether via a Google search or some other fortuitous manner, and want to find out about this form of expression. Here's a post from Ed Cone's blog that for me provides the best description of the spirit of this phenomenon, as well as a link to another excellent blog produced by Chris Lydon.

Chris Lydon digs the intellectual energy of the blogosphere: “The adrenal elite is here.” [most definitely the medullary kind - BK]

The dynamism sensed by Chris is a key to the power of weblogs. Traditional media is static, bound by brand and convention even when put online or broadcast on TV and radio. Weblogs are dynamic – not just as oft-updated personal pages, but as peer-edited components in a constant conversation.

CLINICAL HANDHELDS

Preparing doctors for bedside computing (requires registration)

This is an article appearing in The Lancet regarding a study done on PDA use among Stanford Univ. medical students. "In year 1, we provided PDAs and a 1 h training session to 240 preclinical medical students. Content created included flashcard sets for pathology and microbiology, student contact lists, course schedules, electron micrographs, and the Stanford normal laboratory values. Technical support was provided via e-mail, web postings, and weekly office hours. Medical students were surveyed quarterly about their use of, and attitudes towards, PDAs."

"However, with newer PDAs equipped with 802.11 wireless capabilities and better PDA-based web browsers, the day is almost here when students and doctors will be able to surf the web directly and dynamically on their PDAs in class, on the wards, and at the bedside."

Sorry, but this is occurring already, and no mention is made of cellular networks such as CDMA 2000 which may also provide Web research.

Sony to Announce New Wireless-Enabled PDA on Friday

This is a story from the BargainPDA web site, but I have to thank Michael from The Connected PDA for this link.

"According to a report on page A6 of Investors Business Daily, Sony will announce a new PDA likely featuring WiFi, and potentially GPRS on Friday. While there are very few specifics in the report, the unit will likely be the one shown briefly roughly 6 weeks ago."

New Hospital Rules Limit Residents' Hours

This story is two weeks old but it does mention the use of hospital wireless networks as a strategy for streamlining a resident's workload.

"Massachusetts General, for instance, hopes to use wireless technology to monitor patients' vital information, freeing up residents from doing "pre-rounds" — spending an hour collecting data before their real work began."

Wavelink Announces Wireless Network Management Implementation at Saint Agnes Medical Center (Fresno, CA)

"Six months after deploying a wireless local area network (WLAN) throughout its 330-bed hospital and adjacent cancer center, Saint Agnes implemented Wavelink's solution to proactively manage and monitor the wireless network."

"With the use of a Radius Server and Wavelink's technology, every user attempting to access the network is required to have an authorized MAC address, a WEP key and an additional password that connects the user's device to an access point and utimately allows him to log on to the network."
