Well well well, via Stephen, this is interesting:

"The NSW Department of Education and Training has rolled-out an AU$84 million e-learning system, providing 750,000 public school students and 51,000 teachers with their own e-mail addresses..." [ZDNet]

A few questions, ahem:

1. Why are they forking out AU$84m for stuff that the teachers and students already have... like they're going to use their NSW Ed email addys rather than their yahoo or hotmail.
2. Precisely the reason they won't do the above is because they'll be using them to IM which means that..
3. They won't use any synchronous tools either, and...
4. Even if they did use any of those tools, ahem:

"...The department said the systems would include mechanisms to ensure that inappropriate Internet sites were blocked, the use of bad language was stopped and teachers were able to control chat rooms."

Which makes it a waste of bloody time on it's own 8o<
