Real project based learning

I agree with Dave's sentiment that a long CV does not a good teacher make, but I think he's ignoring another aspect of research, one that is perhaps more closely bound up with learning than even teaching is. The Mark Hopkins/Log ideal notwithstanding, one essential learning relationship is that of the master and apprentice, where the apprentice learns his craft by actually helping the master. This kind of learning relationship happens quite successfully at Williams in the Honors Thesis programs. Generally, a student interested in pursuing research in a field is assigned a project that furthers his advisor's ongoing research agenda. Let's look at how this affects people at Williams from a few different perspectives. ...
