What I did on my summer vacation
I knit this...

Back of Spring 2003 FCEK surplice top
I bought this...

Hand-dyed cashmere nylon sock yarn at $12 for 300-plus yards. Aren't I clever?
And this...

100 percent linen sport weight; a 1.1 lb. cone for $35. I see another tank for Mama!
And I bought some other stuff too, mostly gifties for pals, and a pair of sandals scored at a discounter called Parade of Shoes that all but crippled me on my peregrinations about the city.
All my yarn shopping occurred at School Products, a musty Garment District standyby filled with mill ends and brand-name goodies. The owner, who I believe knit for Donna Karan, has longstanding relationships with Italian mills who cut her incredible deals, which she passes on to customers. The highlights: her hand-dyed cashmere/nylon sock yarn and worsted weight--unbelievably reasonable--and her chenille, merino and linen on cones.
Other highlights: The Yarn Co., spiritual home of Yarn Girls' Guide to Simple Knits, offers tons of recognizable brands, oodles of novelty yarns and gorgeous buttons. Habu Textiles, where you can get wire yarn, silk in all manner of permutations, and unusual Japanese-inspired ideas.
Oh, and I went to a family reunion and some museums, too.
