British psyops in Basra
Well, I've only been home a few minutes, and already I have got some new information. CNN ran a report on British psyops in Basra, and had some pictures of the radio operation that's been reported elsewhere. The programming appears to be on the lines of the US Information Radio, but it's a separate station. Oddly, one of the messages was in British-accented English. I hope they also have some messages in Arabic! It's a high tech computerised operation with a mixed playlist of Iraqi songs and modern stuff like Jennifer Lopez. The one thing missing from the CNN report was the frequency :-(
BTW this psyops station has nothing to do with the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) which is staffed by civilians. I make this point because someone asked me for the frequency of the BFBS AM outlet in Basra. That's easy - there isn't one! Maybe there will be a BFBS outlet there when they take control of the city, but that hasn't happened yet. My colleague Ehard Goddijn did hear BFBS announce this morning on its shortwave service that two FM outlets are now operating in southern Iraq, both on 102.1 MHz. The full shortwave schedule of BFBS is on this page or our Iraq media dossier.
