Wonders will never cease...
Today my front doorbell rang, and it was a nice man from the company that supplies electricity in this neck of the woods. "You're paying too much for your electricity", he said, and implored me to fill in a form he had with him.
Let me explain. Some time last year, I decided to do my bit for the environment and joined a scheme whereby I voluntarily paid a bit more for my electricity on the understanding that the extra money was channelled into projects to save the environment. Unfortunately, not enough people signed up, so the company introduced a slightly cheaper alternative. I had received a notification about this, and an invitation to "downgrade", but since I am not by nature a cheapskate I didn't see any compelling reason to save 5 euro a month.
Now, it seems, they've decided it's too inefficient to have two separate schemes, and they're going house to house begging people to pay less! Money will still be used for projects that protect the environment, but presumably a lower proportion of the total amount will be needed for administration, so the environment could be up on the deal!
As for me, I'm 60 euro a year better off, which pays for a week's groceries.
For once, everyone's a winner!
