Trying to sell a downgrade
Another ring on my doorbell this evening. It was a lady from the company that provides cable TV in this area. They also do cable Internet. I explained that I had an ADSL connection that was recently upgraded to 2 Mbps (it has actually doubled in speed since I first subscribed, at no extra cost). So she showed me what they had to offer, and pointed to a 512 kbps option (i.e. 25% of the speed of the one I have now). I told her I was happy with the ADSL service I already have, so then she tried a different tack and suggested I might be happier paying less for a slower service. I told her that Internet is my living, and I need a fast connection. I said I kept a close watch on what products are available (which is true), and that if I decided I wanted one of their products I would contact them. Since over 50% of Internet users here already have broadband, I wonder how many would actually choose to downgrade, with all the hassle of having to change E-mail addresses etc. There are in fact some even faster options here: one company offers 3 Mbps, but it's about 60% more expensive than I'm paying, so slighly less good value for money. But the cable companies are preying on the ignorance of consumers. I've seen cheapo options as low as 128k being sold a 'broadband'. Give me a break!
