I am not an unbridled RFID enthusiast. I see adoption challenges that vary across markets and retail segments. In some cases, adoption is imminent while, in others, it will be delayed for years. I also believe that, while 5 cent or penny tags will be appropriate for some end-customer consumer products, retailers will also realize major benefits from more powerful tags and value-added applications. Tags that incorporate read/write memory, PKI authentication and Java, as well as unique form factors and environmental sensors will provide far better information and control.
