Learning about RFID and Consumer Privacy Here are some information sources for learning about privacy issues related to RFID:
In my opinion, each of these organizations is highly credible and each is providing valuable information. Those of us involved directly with RFID can benefit from this information. We can use it to form our own opinions about privacy risks associated with RFID. These sites also foster consumer awareness.
Generally, most of the dialog is focused on item level tagging which won't be practical until 2007 at the earliest due to technical and cost problems. Tagging supply chain units such as cases and pallets doesn't seem to create privacy concerns within these organizations.
Another interested group is Consumers Against Supermarkets Privacy Invasion And Numbering known as CASPIAN (http://www.nocards.org). CASPIAN's web sites are flame-filled and their director Katherine Albrecht is a lightning rod. Despite all that, the group has a simple and - in my opinion - reasonable position. CASPIAN wants all tagged consumer products to carry labels, so companies can't secretly tag products without consumers knowing it.
