Yahooligans Launches Monthly Book Club
From LISnews, quoted from a Yahoo press release, I read that Yahooligans is launching a book club today. "Yahooligans, Yahoo's awardwinning Web guide for kids, is featuring a monthly celebrity book recommendation located at http://www.yahooligans.com/bookclub. The program kicks off with Tony Hawks' selection, the modern classic The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Odd Tales by Jon Scieszka. Many of the books children read are recommendations from teachers, parents, and their peers. Recognizing that celebrities have a powerful appeal and influence with children, Yahooligans is working with celebrities such as Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Kwan, Picabo Street, Lance Bass, and Tony Hawk to reach children and motivate them to read." ... [LISNews.com]
dwc: Anything that encourages reading is great, but I think that's an odd list of celebrities. Maybe I'm just way out of the loop when it comes to mainstream American popular culture. Who's Lance Bass, and would my students at ISB know?

Get Caught Reading
"...The Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the Magazine Publishers of America (MPA) have planned a major publicity blitz to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read." [LISNews.com]
dwc: This is a theme I've heard about before. I've got some ideas about how to use it at school. Some of the posters offered by this campaign might be good inspiration as well.

Converting bullies with books
"Bob Cox writes, 'As parents and educators try to deal with what seems like an epidemic of abusive behavior among schoolchildren they often find themselves searching for effective tools. One of the simplest and most overlooked may already be sitting on the shelves of the nation's libraries.'"[LISNews.com]
DWC: This Christian Science Monitor article includes a bibliography and links to books and sites about bullying. School librarians need to be ready to offer lists of appropriate books for bibliotherapy in any situation. I should be sure that our website links to some lists our teachers can use.

"Exploring how we can teach and learn with technology"
I've been adding subscriptions to my news aggregator in the last few days, trying to be conservative, since I know I won't read them if there are too many. The latest one added is Xplana. Its focus is higher education, but there are obvious connections to K-12 schools. I like reading and thinking about the theory and philosophy as a way of informing and strengthening my day-to-day practice, but I wish I knew others I could discuss these articles with.

Holes truths come to big screen
Bob Cox writes, "'Holes' has been published in 30 countries, won a Newbery Medal and is required reading at some middle schools. A recent poll in Read magazine ranked it even higher in popularity among young readers than "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." This review says, after a recent spate of vapid movies aimed at young adults, the Disney-produced 'Holes' offers surprising substance." [LISNews.com]
