SANS unveils top 20 security vulnerabilities. The SANS Institute today released its annual Top-20 list of Internet security vulnerabilities. The list is compiled from recommendations by leading security researchers and companies around the world. [Computerworld News] I've decided that I need to keep up with the Top 20 and try to harden my OS against the WinXP desktop OS exploits. I think I've made a big leap in that direction when I turned off the Microsoft Networking component in my Network Control panel in WinXP. I was amazed it didn't break anything. Explorer works just like normal with it turned off. So does Outlook. My login for Windows wasn't working on the Xserve anyway so I gave up trying to get it to work. I just use SFTP since it's more secure than Windows networking, and closes a lot of exploits that could exist because that service was still enabled. Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror by Brian Eno [iTunes 10 New Releases] I'm really glad to see Wired.com had an article explaining why this album was re-released. It appears it's Eno's career being celebrated after something like 25 years after Music for Airports being released. He even had a big exhibition at the TWA terminal at JFK. That's the terminal Eero Sarinen designed, it's very wavy and curvy and reminiscent of that futuristic trend in design that the architects of the Sydney Opera House followed. One day will we ever achieve the utopian ideal that Brian Eno has tried hinting at musically? I don't know, but its still cool to sit down and listen to those attempts that's for sure. 11:56:26 AM    comment []
