Sun to launch next version of Solaris on Nov. 15. Already available in a beta version, Solaris 10 will have a number of major new features, including a new error-detection system, a highly scalable file system called ZFS and a diagnostic tool known as DTrace. [Computerworld News]
My GOD are there a lot of features in this release. I don't hope to have our F15K at work upgraded to Solaris 10 any time soon however. We're still waiting on going up to Solaris 9. Woudn't Dtrace be cool? And wouldn't a 'native' super duper file system like ZFS be a great step up instead of always having to buy Veritas VxFS? And what about System Containers. How that would make my life easier I cannot tell you. All these different groups using the same machine, leads me to say I would gladly, gladly be a virtual machine running in a system domain. I would let my apache and Real Server sit comfortably in its own system container and know no one could hurt me. That would be the best. And when Dtrace was announced everybody said it was groundbreaking, original, no other system resource monitor like it, nothing quite so fine grained. Everyone running Oracle, Peoplesoft, SAS etc would look at Dtrace to fine tune their installs, and get more speed. Some day, some day.

China plans five-day space mission. Space programme ramping up [The Register]
In light of our failures in deep space missions and with our manned missions, it is encouraging to see China making its first steps into manned space flight. Maybe they and Russia can combine forces and help shoulder a bigger burden of the International Space station. More players cannot be a bad thing as long as the expenses are so high. Maybe there's a tipping point when three countries have the same capabilities in space flight? We'll see. I hope they may be able to contribute a module eventually to the ISS.

Review: DV Camcorders. [MacCentral News]
Interesting the Optura 40 did as well as it did. Panasonic has some three chip cameras in this same price range. I've always wondered if a cheap 3 chip can out do a slightly more expensive 1 chip with a better, larger CCD. Looks like I should be looking at Canon when I decide to buy my next digital camcorder that's for sure. I'll be reading and re-reading this article for a while just to do my own comparisons to the Panasonic 3 chip crowd.
