I am not working this blog enough. I am a bad boy. But I've been on the depressed side lately. Probably with good reason:

  1. My unemployment is about to run out, and I haven't had a real project all summer.
  2. I haven't had time to even start playing with the experimental Linux drivers for my cable-modem card, so I've been spending most of my days in Windows. This should actually help my blog-hours, since I can actually use Radio, but it doesn't seem to work out that way. This sends us into a death spiral of guilt, leading to posts that sound like this one.
  3. I somehow managed to pick the worst week in history to want to start using Blogrolling.com, since he's updating his site and not taking new accounts.

Ah, but maybe things will start turning around. This week is shaping up well (not in hierarchical order):

  • I retook the civil service tests for my old job with the State of Wisconsin. Before becoming a professional geek, I was a Program Assistant for assorted state agencies. With all my experience, I ranked 2nd in the state for entry-level clerical jobs. Talk about your mixed blessings, but this means that while I'll be making half my old tech-writer salary, I will most likely be employed. Even in the face of massive budget cuts at the state level, offices still need receptionists. So today I got my first potential job in the mail. It's only a matter of time....
  • For the second time in my life, I passed my written driver's license test today. I may actually be driving a car before the year is out. I may tell this long, sordid story someday, but for now let's just say I wasn't like all the other teens, anxiously awaiting the day I'd have my own wheels. High school driver's ed was not a class I looked forward to, and my gift D in same was not earned. Oh, and the family car passed its emissions test, too!
  • Later in the day, my marvelous literary agent, Carole McClendon, called me. There may yet be a market for my intro to the Linux Desktop book. But that's all I'm going to say on that.
  • Tomorrow I'm trying out for Jeopardy! The "Brain Bus" is coming to our Native American casino with the Clue Crew inside. They're going to test 1000 people, and I intend to be one of them. With some good fortune, we'll tell you all about it next time.

So things are starting to look up. And the California Recall gets weirder all the time. I'm trying to control my obsession with it. But it's so much fun!
