The establishment of this knowledge-based Peace Government is, in part, to replace our corrupt, money-driven system (in which elected leaders have no expertise apart from raising special interest money) with the principle of a “meritocracy”—leadership by the competent.

Our call for a new Peace Government is already receiving national media coverage.

WASHINGTON, DC -- A federal judge who handed down a one-day sentence to medical marijuana advocate Ed Rosenthal in California should be commended along with the jurors who pressured him to do so, Libertarians say.

"Judge Charles R. Breyer just gave every drug warrior in America a cold, hard slap in the face," said Ron Crickenberger, political director of the Libertarian Party. "If every judge displayed this much common sense, the government's war on sick and dying Americans could be over within weeks."

Breyer, a U.S. District judge in San Francisco, ignored federal prosecutors' recommendation for a five-year term and sentenced Rosenthal to one day in jail on Wednesday for growing 100 marijuana plants. Breyer also set Rosenthal free immediately, saying he had already served the time.

Because federal law prohibits medical marijuana, Breyer had refused during the trial to allow jurors to hear evidence that Rosenthal was raising the plants with the explicit approval of local health officials.

The Libertarian Party has joined an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down provisions of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA).

On September 8 -- a full month before the Supreme Court's traditional October opening -- the nation's highest court will hear oral arguments from attorneys representing the Libertarian National Committee, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the Club for Growth, the National Right to Life Committee, and others.

The Supreme Court's nine justices will be asked to rule on the constitutionality of the BCRA, which was signed into law by President George W. Bush in March 2002.

On May 2, 2003, a federal Appeals Court in Washington, DC struck down a number of provisions of the BRCA, but 17 days later issued a stay, freezing its decision until the Supreme Court could review the case.

The appeal court judges said they imposed the stay so candidates for the 2004 election would not have to operate under "three different regulatory regimes" that govern how campaign money can be raised and spent -- http://www.lp.org/lpnews/0307/bcra_appeal.html

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The D.C. Statehood Green Party strongly opposes the use of taxpayers' money to pay for a new baseball stadium in Washington, D.C., and is severely criticizing Mayor Anthony Williams' pledge of $338 million in public money to fund its construction.

"The ballpark boondoggle is another in a long line of Mayor Williams' schemes to transfer money from taxpayers' pockets and from desperately needed social services into the accounts of millionaire and billionaire cronies," said Ward 2 activist and party member Debby Hanrahan.  "That $338 million is sorely needed for public school textbooks, equipment, and repairs, for health care, for the Housing Production

The federal district court in Brooklyn (Judge John Gleeson) gave the Green Party a resounding victory late Friday afternoon, ruling that New Yorkers will continue to have the right to enroll as Green Party voters, and further that the Green Party will continue to be listed on the voter registration forms.

The preliminary injunction requires the State Board of Elections to continue to maintain green party voter  registration information at least until the 2006 Gubernatorial election.

"This is a great victory for democracy, for the more than 30,000 New Yorkers who have already enrolled as  Greens, and for the millions who continue to oppose the bipartisan war at home and abroad.  Judge Gleeson has spoke out strongly in favor of the constitutional right for voters to join together in a political party. It is important to preserve the right of the Green Party to provide an alternative to voters who are committed to  peace and nonviolence, to grassroots democracy, justice and ecology. Iowa Greens Call for Harkin, Grassley and Nussle to Support WMD Investigation

The Iowa Green Party on Monday June 9 called for U.S. Senators Tom Harkin and Charles Grassley and U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle to support efforts to launch official investigations into the Bush Administration's still - unsubstantiated pre-war claims of Iraqi WMD capability.

"Iowa Greens believe democracy must empower citizens to obtain timely and accurate information from their government," said Ted Pfeiff, secretary/treasurer of the Scott County Green Party. "When such facts aren't easily accessible, elected oficials like Harkin, Grassley and Nussle have the responsibility of acting on the public's behalf and bringing them to light for scrutiny."

Sen. John McCain has already called for an official inquiry into the WMD claims, ...

June 10, 2003
Washington, D.C. - DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe issued the following statement:

"President Bush today staged yet another event touting the 'No Child Left Behind Act' but the public would be better served if he actually funded the bill. By slashing the resources for the act, President Bush has forced states and school systems across the country to cut programs and activities, leaving millions of children behind.

"Instead of wasting time with empty photo-ops, President Bush should spend his time lobbying his own Republican Members of Congress to pass a child tax credit bill to fix the GOP tax bill that now leaves millions of poor children behind.

"The President should also fulfill the promise that he made as a candidate and tell his fellow Republicans to fully fund the 'No Child Left Behind Act' and save the states from having to deal with yet another unfunded mandate from the Bush White House."

The Westar scandal exposed the worst side of GOP politics: a corporation wanted legislation that would boost its profits, and tried to buy what it wanted with campaign contributions. The legislators involved gave the company just what it asked for, removing the giveaway only after a public scandal engulfed the company.

The story is a simple one told by Westar internal documents. The emails and memos below paint a picture of the perfect quid pro quo: a "seat at the table" for campaign contributions. (Note: You will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the Westar documents.)

Step 1: "A Seat at the Table"
In a series of three emails, Westar Vice Presidents Douglas Lawrence and Douglas Lake discuss their "plan for participation to get a seat at the table." The plan involves...
