Online: Republican senator calls for the development of new technology to remotely destroy computers belonging to illegal music downloaders. [Guardian Unlimited]

David Remer of Political News and Analysis Comments:

The Constitution of the U.S. guarantees citizens the protection from loss of life, property or liberty without due process of law. Automated destruction of citizen's computers for illegal file swapping fails to protect owners of such computers from actions of others who may obtain access to the owner's computer, and by passes the judicial system and constitutional protections of due process.

Most governmental reform efforts have been focused on elementary school students, but the data released today suggest that serious problems loom at the high school level. By Diana Jean Schemo. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]

David Remer of Political News and Analysis Comments:

There are intense efforts on the part of vested interest groups to establish vouchers (money would come from public school funds) to permit parents to send children to private or religious schools. If there are serious problems at the high school level for American students learning performance, reduced funding of public schools can be predicted to worsen this high school performance for the majority of students left in the public school educational system.

Statement by the President

I commend the House of Representatives for acting to permanently eliminate the death tax. The death tax results in unfair double taxation of income and it hurts America's small businesses, which are the engine of job creation. Today's vote is a victory for fairness, job creation and certainty for family businesses, farmers and ranchers.

Permanently eliminating the death tax is an important step toward increasing fairness in the tax code and promoting economic security. I urge the Senate to act on this important matter so that we can eliminate this unfair tax once and for all.  Whitehouse

We're committed to reforming the Medicare system so America's seniors get the health care they need.   Whitehouse
