Six Days on Deer Isle
The four day trip turned into a six days because it rained on the first three and turned brilliantly clear on Mon., Tues and Wed. so we decided to stay on in Stonington which is at the very bottom of the Blue Hill Pennisula and the jumping off point for the ferry to Isle Au Haut. Stonington is one of the few real fishing towns left in Maine with a fleet of over 300 active lobster boats.
If you're ever in the area try "The Fisherman's Friend" in Stonington for lunch or dinner. Dinner for two including a 20% tip will be below $40. It's BYOB and most people do show up with one or two bottles of vino. We also found two other great places to eat. Arborvine in Blue Hill and the Brooklin Inn in Brooklin. You can have a great dinner for two with a bottle of wine for around $75. And for breakfast you have to try the Harbor Cafe in Stonington. They have Blueberry pancakes to die for and you will be hard pressed to spend more than $15 for two including tip.
Now for wine I figured I was in the middle of nowhere so I'd have to settle for something with a screw off cap but I stumbled across a great little wine shop called "The Clown." Actually the store is a combination of an art gallery, antiques store and wine shop.... go figure. The locations in Stonington and Blue Hill. The manager of the shop in Stonington, Zoe Alexis Scott, was very helpful with both the wine selection and recommendations for places to eat. She instinctively sensed I was a cheap son of bitch and steered me towards some Chilean, South African and Australian whites under $15 a bottle.
I easily gained five pounds and maybe more so I have to consider the trip a gustatory success even if it did rain the first three days.
