I just sat through a short talk from Jim Allchin, group vice president of Microsoft Corp.’s Platforms Group.  He announced some changes to the Longhorn plan that have a lot of people excited.  There is also a press release with the same message.

The main points that he conveyed:

  • Microsoft will accelerate the Longhorn release to be available in 2006.  This includes having it in retail stores by the Holidays.
  • Parts of Longhorn (Indigo, Avalon) will be available to Windows XP at sometime in that timeframe.  From what I could gather, it appears that not all of the original Longhorn features will make it down to these O/S's, but it will guarantee a much longer lifetime for them.
