Rebecca's Blog
Mostly news stories or articles of interest in the future to me. I'll eventually get around to adding my own ideas and stories on a more regular basis.

I'm preparing for some important discussions and doing some inspiring reading.  A quote that really caught meis "If you don't ask for what you want, you'll simply have to take what you get."  It also further explains, "Don't expect otherts to take the first step.  Don't make them guess, because most often, they'll guess wrong.  Be cleared.  Be prepared.  Be collaborative, and then ask for what you want."

Defining what exactly I want is not always easy. I'm a girl...I think on emotions, "i want to be happy"..."i want to be excited to go to work in the morning"..."i want to feel appreciated"..."i want to do work that will further my career...i'm not satisfied with where i am."  you get the point.

I think it's also important to not just think in terms of what I want, but of ways that I can make those things work well for the company.

Anyhow, that's what I'm thinking about this eve.

Job sculpting & 8 Life interests. Here's an overview of an article titled Job Sculpting in the September-October 1999 issue of Harvard Business Review by two Harvard psychologists, Timothy Butler and James Waldroop. According to Butler and Waldroop, there are eight life interests that they have... [The Occupational Adventure (sm) Blog]

Interesting article saying there are 8 life interests and most people are motivated by 1-3.  Mine are...

Application of Technology....How many times have I heard software companies tell me that they can’t keep technicians unless they regularly have new toys to play with? These people love the inner workings of things.

Counseling and Mentoring....For some, nothing is more enjoyable than teaching. Whether they do it because they enjoy watching others succeed, or because they want to be appreciated, they see social value in their cause. I love to teach.

Managing People and Relationships....Wanting to manage people is different than wanting to counsel and mentor. The focus here is on outcomes, and these people enjoy working day-to-day with others. They like to motivate, organize and direct.

Probably the last one is the biggest...

Microcar and Minicar Club annual meet photos. Once a year, members of the National Microcar and Minicar Club meet to show off their fully-restored pint-sized vehicles. Wouldn't the roadways of America be a lot more fun to look at if people drove microcars instead of SUVs? The 2004 meet will be in Huntington Beach in July. Link

These cars are so cute!
