10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.
A rule that came to mind in 1983. Think of what you skip reading a novel: thick paragraphs of prose you can see have too many words in them. What the writer is doing, he's writing, perpetrating hooptedoodle, perhaps taking another shot at the weather, or has gone into the character's head, and the reader either knows what the guy's thinking or doesn't care. I'll bet you don't skip dialogue.

Writing...I've been doing a little more, but not quite meeting my goal. I'm finding my "stories" vary greatly by the mood, my coffee and where I got my newspaper.

In a recent copy of Fast Company there was an article on why, in this day in age, women still make less than men and hold less executive positions. Part of their argument was that women aren't as willing (again, in aggregate) to work the extra hours to get into those positions and hold them successfully. It seemed silly to me at first glance…I’m a hard working girl. Then, today, my boss says I can take some project management classes I’m interested in, but the affordable one would require me to be in class every Saturday from 3/20 – 5/22. Ouch. Saturdays? What happened to Thursday nights? I have to give up yard work and hikes and outside fun during the height of spring?
I know in my head I jump at. Life willing, I’ll have many springs ahead and the advancement it gives me career-wise is more important than eight, fun Saturday’s. Still…I just can’t make myself jump. Doesn’t mean I won’t do it…
