Urban Educ8r: A Wickerblog
This weblog is dedicated primarily to the discussion of Education issues and policies, as well as to chronicling the author's experiences as an inner-city school teacher. These days, the education discussion is too much in the hands of ignorant politicians merely doing what they need to gain re-election, and not enough in the hands of knowledgable professionals with first hand experience.

St. Louis Post reports that "Teachers get no respect as student rudeness rises." And how. The article suggests that students have to learn manners and civility in school because they are not learing it at home. I've had the same thought. I mean to the point of even having a course in social skills.

Apropos to this subject, earlier this school year when our students were taking the High School Graduation Test in Writing, a Vietnamese student of mine, in response to the prompt "if you could design a new course for your school, what would it be?" , wrote that she would create a course called "Social Behavior" because the students at school were so "rude" and had such "bad manners" including "cursing their teachers."

That is one of the benefits of teaching English Language Learners. Most of them come from cultures where teachers are highly respected, have real power to punish misbehaivor, and where you will get your tail whupped if you disrespect your teacher at all.
