I too have been watching Voip and related areas for a while. I really don't understand the current wave of products and hype in this area.
The end point technology seems have been there since the beginning of time (well since 1996 or so -- the beginning of the current internet era) - new products and entry seem to just continually tweak that technology. What isn't there is a mechanism to get end to end connections that are dependable with the guarantee of bandwidth (in real time) to carry on a conversation.
Until some sort of internet based quality of service mechnanism exists, the internet remains a very hostile place for real time audio and video calling. And without dependability, business will be reluctant to use such a service -- relegating voip to perpetual toy, hobby or experimental status.
