Player Profile
Lev Alburt
Alburt was born in 1945 and became an International Grandmaster in 1977. He was a teacher in Odessa prior to immigrating to the United States in 1979. He became US Champion in 1984 and again in 1985.
He was famous for playing provocative openings (Benko Gambit, Alekhine's defense) so well that the top players in the US at the time had to revise their opening systems to combat them. However, I believe that his writing will be considered his lasting contribution to chess.
Lev's Comprehensive Chess Course Series is nothing short of fantastic. His Chess Training Pocket Book: 300 positions (vol. 6 in the series) really opened my eyes. It conveys so much essential chess knowledge in such a digestible format that I can give it my unqualified recommendation.
In the next installment of this series I will take a closer look at volume 7 Just the Facts which concentrates on endings. This is another must have for your library.
