Yes, this is not a hard news item at first glance, but this feature piece on the Tokyo String Quartet by the Kansas City Star's classical music critics does say something about the much-vaunted kokusaiteki.
Anyway, we are most impressed that a newspaper in Kansas City actually has a classical music critic. It does not have a correspondent in Asia, however.

Japan seems to be doing more than the usual to pacify China on this issue of poison gas left over from WWII. One of the dirty secrets here in Japan is that some of this stuff is also buried domestically and many incidents of it being uncovered have been covered up.

Japan's major banks manage to wallpaper over the major cracks in the walls again. But the crisis is far from being resolved. We predict there will be several more mergers or collapses before objective analysts can say the bad loan debacle has been resolved.
