Japan's population is expected to peak at 127 million a few years from now. If the birthrate remains at the same low level - the population will drop below 100 million in about half a century. This worries economists and others, who say unless Japan embraces millions of immigrants, it will not be able to maintain its standard of living or its status as an economic powerhouse.

A big tumble for the Nikkei -- some 328 points -- more than 3.1% percent to send the key index down to 10,045. The broadbased TOPIX was off nearly 2.4% percent sending it to a close below the 1,000 level for the first time in six sessions. First section volume dropped to 969 million shares. Declining issues swamped gainers by nearly a four-to-one ratio. The greenback fell to a three-year low against the Japanese currency in Asian trading today. Worries about further intervention by Japanese currency authorities kept traders from pushing the dollar below 107.50 yen -- believed to be the trigger point for Finance Ministry action. Late in the Asia session, the greenback was around 107.65 yen, very slightly off its late Friday New York quote and 2/3 of a yen below where it was at the end of last week in Tokyo.
