Before any of you people get the impression that all is woe at Aycock Middle School... let me set the record straight.  Blogs, like newspapers, get more notice when they cover controversy and perhaps I have done too much of that in regards to my neighborhood's namesake school.

Tonight I went to the Aycock band concert to hear daughter Josie play oboe in the seventh grade band.  I continue to be amazed at what band director extraordinaire Julie Parker coaxes, year-after-year, from those little minds of 11-14 year-old mush.

Aycock has the best middle school band in the County.  This fact is proven every year because we consistantly place more students in Guilford's All-County Band than any other four or five middle schools combined.  Further proof can be found in the Superior rating that Julie's 8th grade band recently received at the band festival down at Carowinds.  I'm telling you, being the son of one of the finest band directors Kentucky ever knew, I know good bands... Aycock's is outstanding!

Great things happen at that school, and I will try to keep you better informed about them.

I picked up a copy of the Greater Greensbor Observer yesterday (no web presence... still).  On the cover was a picture of Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier with the title "Seldom the Credit, Always the Blame".

"Good", I thought, "finally someone is going to report that there are actually alot of good things that Dr. Grier has accomplished despite all of the uproar over the High Point lottery."  I flipped to the article and... nothing.  Just another re-cap and re-hash of what occured at the School Board meeting last week. The article had nothing to do with the promise of the front page  Both the N&R and the Rhino covered that meeting down to the minute a long time ago and the GGO offered no new insight.

Also, they continued to report on "studies" about how wonderful Greensboro is, this time because we have so many colleges and universities.  Very true... very boring... and, they admit - very bogus.  I agree with Ed Cone's survey and opinion about Greensboro's newest alt-weekly.  Their credibility as a serious news source is off to a bad start.

I'll give them a few more chances, but if they continue to waste my time I will stop seeking their paper out and only read it if I happen to see one laying around.

After a long hiatus, Jim Capo is again blogging... profusely.  Jim is the Libertarian candidate for Guilford County Commissioner in District 7.

I haven't yet had the time to go through the whole thing but he is has put up a well-linked post on Guilford County School Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier and The Horace Mann League and how that that association brought consultant Richard Kahlenberg's viewpoints (links via Capo) to bear on the High Point "Choice Plan".  Kahlenberg's presentation to the School Board and parents was covered in this morning's N&R.  Capo was there also.

From a quick scan of the information provided, Capo is associating the High Point Plan all the way back to Horace Mann's visit to Prussia in the 1890's.  It is a convoluted path but a compelling one to follow - perhaps he will give us the Reader's Digest version soon.

Welcome back Jim.
