REVIEWING JOB SEARCH METHOD EFFICACY Approximately 14 pages ago, I began my dissertation on the effectiveness of the primary search methods for someone already in the job market and trying to find another job, not make a career change. Since I have spent so much time talking about the various job search methods, I think a review is needed before I begin the long and arduous topic of writing resumes. The following the list of primary job search methods in descending order of efficacy.
- Networking
- Working with third party recruiters (headhunters)
- Looking up, calling and asking potential employers if they are hiring for the type of position you are trained to do.
- Knocking on doors of potential employers and asking for a job.
- Placing resume on a niche job board that deals in your field of expertise
- Responding to postings on Corporate Web Sites
- Answering newspaper job advertisements
- Answering Trade of Professional Magazine job postings
- Placing your resume on a Big Job Board and waiting
- Sending resumes to targeted companies without previous contact
Obviously, combining several distinct and different job search methods will improve your odds of finding a new job dramatically. Placing you resume on Monster, HotJobs, and Careerbuilder, only counts as one method done 3 times, not a combination.
