WHAT AM I DOING HERE? A close friend of mine made a commented on my postings today (I know he is my friend because he actually reads these postings and he has a life). He said the postings are good but I not really covering any new ground (or something like that). I agree with him entirely. My purpose of these postings to help job hunters get jobs is not to break any new ground, they are written to help get job hunters a job, period. It is much easier to hit singles and doubles than it is to hit home runs. As a nation we now all want to hit home runs. Why be a Ted Williams or a Ty Cobb when you can be a Barry Bonds? Now look at the present World Series and the past few World Series. How many teams have major home run hitters? Most games are won by singles and doubles, not home runs.
Getting a job requires skills that have not changed much over the years. You have to find and convince the person who has the job that he or she needs to hire you. Keeping the job requires a different skill set. Doing the little things right will usually result in getting the job. It amazes me that with all of the books, Internet articles, magazine articles, seminars, and etc. that so many job hunters screw the whole process up. I believe this is because many job hunters are trying to hit the home runs instead of hitting singles and doubles. Job hunting should be a very methodical and precise process and I realize this makes my material rather dry but I am after results. Do not try to eliminate or lightly address steps in the process. Home runs do occasionally win ball games but not as many as consistent single and double hitting.
