When I began writing this series of Weblogs to help job searchers find a job I published my personal resume just to give everyone an idea of my experience and why I feel kind of qualified to tell people how to find a job.  I am presenting my resume again so I can use it as an example of how to write a simple resume that will work for most situations, such as Networking, working with headhunters and responding to newspaper advertisements.  A slightly altered resume (more Functional) should probably be used for job boards and I will discuss it when I finish with this resume layout.  I call this a HISTORICAL (or chronological) resume because it deals primarily with your work history.  The other type of a resume that is getting increasingly popular is the FUNCTIONAL resume and it is popular for posting on job boards and responding to company job postings on the Internet.  Both have their place but believe it or not, the HISTORICAL  is what most corporate and third party recruiters want to know and expect to see.  If they see something else, they probably will not respond as positively to the resume.

I am going to recommend a couple of resume books although I don't think you really need to buy one.  Resume writing is really quite simple if you follow a few simple guidelines.

  • DAMN GOOD RESUME GUIDE  by Yana Parker
  • RESUMES FOR DUMMIES  by Joyce Lane Kennedy

Just remember that a resume will not get you a job but it will keep you from getting one.  Also, every couple of years some expert says the resume is dead, don't believe it.  I believe it may be a little less important than it was in years past when travel was slow and the only way to communicate was via snail mail or telephone for short periods of time due to the expense (I still remember an egg timer being kept by my parent's phone and being asked to get off the party line because someone was expecting an important call).  I doubt that the resume will die anytime soon but writing an effective resume is not difficult once you get past the empty sheet writer's block.   In the next posting, I'll present the basic outline for writing an effective resume.
