Dave is currently reading The Story of Christian Theology, by Roger E. Olson (InterVarsity Press, 1999). Picked it up at my local public library, an institution supported in large measure by a constant flow of late fees paid by yours truly. Olson is an evangelical scholar so he's doing a lot of dancing: defending theology from fundamentalist skepticism about the whole theological enterprise; defending evangelical beliefs against liberal theology; and defending traditional Christian theology against new religious movements (the PC term for cults) and their modern reincarnations of ancient Christian heresies. I'll blog interesting topics in future posts. The book got three glowing reader reviews at Amazon.com here.

Post-Christian America begins to emerge in . . . Portland? Think of it as green religion, organically grown in the Pacific Northwest. Click here for a Christian commentary on the whole concept (don't expect wild cheers). Sample quote from a 28-year Oregonian "whose spirituality is based in nature:" When I get out into nature, immediately I can feel my body chemistry change. It is such a physical experience, it affects the rest of me. I dunno, to me it sounds like he's been celebrating eco-mass with a sacramental reefer.

Some Halloween history in a short article here. Sample: Halloween was first celebrated by the ancient Celts of Scotland. This day was called Samhain (pronounced SOW -- WHEN). In pre-Christian Ireland and Scotland, the Celtic year ended on October 31, the eve of Samhain, and was celebrated with both religious and harvest rites.
