Springfield: So Well-Mannered

Every year since 1977, Maribelle Young Stewart has compiled a list of America's best-mannered cities. She has some expertise in this area, having written 17 books on etiquette.

Her top well-mannered town is Charleston, SC, but Springfield comes in second. Here's a quote from a story currently posted on CNN:

A number of Midwestern cities tied for second place this year: Springfield, Illinois, Peoria, Illinois, and the Quad Cities, which include Bettendorf and Davenport in Iowa and Moline and Rock Island in Illinois.

"They are all about the same size and have the same attitudes and their approaches are the same -- they are very wholesome, friendly people," Stewart said.

Pensacola, Florida, was third, San Francisco, California, was fourth, and the Omaha, Nebraska, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, area was fifth. Rounding out the list were Nashville, Tennessee, New York, Seattle,Washington, Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California.

I'm sure that the 58s who still live in Springfield will be gratified by this honor. And they might give some of the credit to us ill-mannered types who left!

Stan and Mary Thomas: New Home

Mary Thomas writes that she and Stan have made a successful move from Nevada to Missouri. The journey took 3 days by car, the furniture arrived in 8 days, and they are still unpacking some 237 boxes in their new condo.

585 Coeur de Royale #101, Creve Coeur, MO 63141
(314) 989-0337

The location is a half mile from Interstate 270, at the Olive exit.

Mary begins work at HDi Clayton on January 20: "I was sleeping on the couch yesterday and Stan said that I very clearly said: 'I don't want to go back to work.' So you all know how I feel about that."

After many years in the desert, they are adjusting to Midwest winter but also to its friendly neighbors. Mary hopes everyone is well and had good holidays, and urges us to keep in touch.
