Salute to Moms

Mother's Day may have been invented by the flower and greeting-card merchants of America, but hey, it's a good day of remembrance, anyway. A Sunday in May when the grass is lush and the cherry trees are abloom is a fitting day to express some love and appreciation to the ladies in our lives who raised us.

Many of us have lost our parents, some quite recently this year. To them we send our sympathy and the hope that all the memories are good. For those of us still fortunate to have a mom or dad living, we say Happy Days to all of them, and a special thanks to Mother, who put up with us as kids and taught us how to be parents.

SHS History

An interesting corner of the SHS Web Site features SHS History, from 1857 to the present. One of the oldest high schools in central Illinois, SHS has long had a reputation for excellence. The faculty and students were high achievers, and the town leaders managed to fund school programs at a generous level. It also helped that for many years SHS was the only secondary school in town.

The building at Lewis and Adams Streets dates from 1916. Formerly the site of Forest Park, and also of a church graveyard, this area was at the time the western edge of town. Once you wrap your mind around that fact, it becomes fun to follow the history of the school, and of its sending neighborhoods, down through the years.

The site has a link for each decade from 1920 to 2000, and also a link for every class year. These are amusing to read, because the student writers think that an era in which the Philos sponsored a "Mothers' Tea" is bizarre beyond belief. So check out 1958 and the years surrounding it, for another stroll down memory lane.
