Are We Really Boomers?

The generation born in 1940 has never had an identity of its own. We are too late for the Depression or Mid-Century era, and too early for the Boomers of post-WW II. A recent book, Speaking Freely: A Guided Tour of American English, makes 1940 the start date for Boomers, and I wonder if you are comfortable with that.

An excerpt from the book appears on this Web site. Scroll down to the third section marked by * * * (or search for the word Babyboom) and read on. What do you think? Do these categories matter? Is there another way to describe our place in history?

Warren Staley '60

Libbie Peterson sent me a link to a Journal-Register story about Warren Staley, class of 1960, who on May 12 entered the SHS Hall of Fame.

Warren is the brother of our very own Sylvia Staley '58. In our senior year, Warren was a sophomore who played JV football. His pictures appear on pages 56 and 134 of the 1958 Capitoline.

Warren is now chairman and CEO of Cargill, Inc. a Minneapolis company that processes food and agricultural products, with 101,000 employees in 60 countries.

In his speech at SHS, Warren gave credit to his math teacher, Lorene Campbell, for helping him develop the study habits that earned him a BS in electrical engineering.

Congratulations to Warren, who is a credit to his family (especially his proud sister) and to SHS class and character!
