Update on C. E. Welch
Ron Wilson visited CE yesterday and spoke to Carolyn Baldwin Quinlan, who sent this news to me:
"CE is in Room 205B at Memorial. He seemed glad to see me, and although
the nurses said not to stay too long, we did visit for a few minutes.
He said he had been put up in a chair today by physical therapists, and
felt they were trying to kill him. He said he can't stand up yet, but
hopefully will be getting into more therapy soon.
"Please urge the class members to send cards. I would imagine this is
going to take a while to get him back on his feet, but he seems to be
getting a good start."
Thanks, Carolyn and Ron, for relaying this hopeful news. Hang in there, CE, and classmates, please send him a note or card:

John Linxwiler
John Linxwiler, SHS '58, is the current director of the Springfield
Parks and Recreation Commission. Suzanne Lee Boyd '58 recently sent me
this account of John's activities:
"As I walked in Washington Park this morning, I reflected upon how much
our classmate, John Linxwiler, has done for Springfield's parks during
his stint at the helm of Parks and Recreation. So many improvements
have been made.
"The Washington Park lagoon now has a lovely boardwalk, on which
everyone enjoys walking to gaze at the ducks and other waterfowl. (Some
day, we may have the annual Miss America contest right here on our very
own boardwalk).
"The park playground
has been upgraded to a state-of-the-art area for the kids. The picnic
shelter now has attractive landscaping. The rose and flower gardens are
more gorgeous than ever. The tennis courts have been improved, along
with the addition of a new pavilion since the old one burned down.
"The newer Rotary and Centennial Parks are wonderful additions to our
city. We take our grandchildren there frequently to play, since we live
nearby. There are many, many other blatant restorations & revamping
that could be mentioned.
"I haven't actually seen John in years, but I hear his name often
mentioned in regard to the parks. He always sat behind me in
classes--my last name being 'Lee' then, & his, of course,
'Linxwiler.' So, thanks, John, for being another productive member of
our SHS Class of '58!"
Congratulations, John, and thanks, Suzi, for such a newsworthy item. A story on John appears in the September 19, 2004 Illinois Times. He notes that the best public playground for children is at Washington Park, at 1500 South Grand Avenue.
