Halloween
Halloween has become the second biggest holiday in the USA, second only
to Christmas. A "big" holiday is a costly one, as consumers spend
boodles on candy, costumes, decorations and party supplies.
All right, I am a Scrooge when it comes to Halloween. The holiday I
remember from long ago was simple: you dressed up as a pirate or a
ghost and went off to a basement party to bob apples or pin the tail on
a donkey. The treats were basic and the tricks innocuous; maybe a
soaped window or two.
Enough grousing. Harriett Smith Sidoli '58 has sent a Halloween card,
appropriate to this wary time in history, and perhaps it will put you
in a holiday mood. I am waiting for Thanksgiving, one of my all-time
favorite days of the year.
