Purple USA
The notion that the USA divides into red and blue states, according to
political choices, over-simplifies the situation. The voting instead
tends to follow population density and distribution: blue in the metro
regions, red in the rural areas, and a whole lot of purple in
moderately populated places.
A colleague of mine at Princeton has prepared 3 fascinating maps
that demonstrate these political facts of life. In this Thanksgiving
week, they suggest that we may not be as severely divided as the
popular media claim.
Or so we may hope.
