The following two links are the first that I found when I started my voyage of exploration into the subject of school size:

The Makings of a Social Disaster!

Labour would seem to have a policy of closing down small schools. Currently the schools in Upper Hutt, where I live are threatened with 'consolidation'. All the research that I can find shows that this is a retrograde step, and that the long term cost to society will include:

  • Increased welfare dependency
  • Higher school drop out rates
  • Increased crime
  • A break down in community values
  • Alienation of minority (and female) students
  • Lower grades for at risk students
  • Increased drug and alcohol abuse
In light of the current outcry about child abuse, rising youth suicide and failing community values in this country I am concerned about the effects of small school closure on our society. Our children and our society are at risk! In the Unites States large sums are being spent on reversing the damage done by large central schools... Is the next government going to have to do the same for New Zealand?
