Group Charges OMB, CEQ with Secret Deals on Atrazine
The Natural Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit Nov. 13, 2003, charging the White House Office of Management and Budget and Council on Environmental Quality with violating the Freedom of Information Act. NRDC says the White House is refusing to turn over documents which would show a secret deal with industry to keep EPA from more tightly regulating Atrazine, a common herbicide which pollutes some drinking water. Its health effects are controversial.

Congress Shields Energy Dept. from Open Govt. Law
A bill now awaiting President Bush's signature would remove public scrutiny and independent scientific review of certain aspects of the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, CA -- a mammoth laser fusion project. The fiscal 2004 defense authorization includes exemptions of the project from the Federal Advisory Committees Act (FACA) which requires disclosure of certain meetings and documents. Critics say the move will cover up inefficiency and conflict-of-interest among contractors working on the project. Nov. 13 Oakland Trib. story. Secrecy News story.
