Nathan Deakes is more confident of getting to the starting line for the 50km

The Age - Nathan Deakes is more confident of getting to the starting line for the 50km road walk after consulting the Finnish surgeon who did the original operation on his hamstring in 2003.

Professor Sakari Orava reviewed Deakes' MRI scans on Friday morning in Helsinki and explained to him that the soreness that put him out of the 20km walk was most likely caused by swelling which, in turn, was putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

After an injection and instruction to rest the Australian is determined to do all he can to get to the line in the longer event next Friday.

Luke Adams, fifth in Paris in 2003, and Jared Tallent, will compete in the 20km walk today.

Cath third woman home in 24-hour 100 mile

Lynn News - Local ace Cath Duhig defied injury to record third woman home in the Norfolk 100 mile 24-hour walk at Lynnsport over the weekend. Cath shrugged off a pulled muscle to finish in 22 hours 9 minutes. She said: "The woman who finished second did so in a time just a few minutes shy of what I did when I qualified as a Centurion at Newmarket in 2003, so I think it could have been an interesting race had I been race fit.
