Detroit's New Crisis Could Be Its Worst. Detroit has resumed its long slide to automotive oblivion, and everyone's getting his two cents in about how to stop the bleeding. By By DANNY HAKIM. [NYT > Business]

A large piece of the automation industry is dependant upon purchases by the automobile industry. This article in The New York Times details the current woes of General Motors. Makes one stop and ponder the potential short term fate of our industry. Jim Pinto, writing in the forthcoming April issue of Automation World, challenges industry leaders to start looking more broadly for new business. If one of the major automation customers is looking a little ill, many automation suppliers may catch cold--unless they start branching out.

I have had many conversations with Benson Hougland of Opto 22 about this very subject. Over the years I've written a few times about ways that comany has applied its automation product portfolio to applications other than factory automation. For the sake of the automation industry, it's time others follow that lead and Jim's advice.
