Soccer
It's in the 30s with a strong wind and rain in western Ohio. I had too much work to do, so I turned down the opportunity to referee a bunch of college men's soccer scrimmages this afternoon up in Bowling Green. If you know Ohio geography, you'll realize that BG is up in the flatlands. There's nothing for a hundred miles in any direction to block the wind. Good call,.
There's a youth soccer tournament in Columbus this weekend. Makes you think that April 1 is a little early to start outdoor sports in Ohio. I'm also glad I'm not there. Ever run outside for five or six hours in shorts in a cold rain? I have. It's not pleasant. Even for the kids.
Soccer popularity has really grown. I introduced my 8-year-old son to it as a team sport, fun to play and great exercise for a kid. Much better than flag football. Then we both got sucked in. I coached one of the first competitive teams in our city (goes back over 18 years, now). Was the first certified referee in the county. Now, I've coached higher levels, refereed higher levels and do so much administrative work I should get paid. Oh, I do get paid for some of it.
I'm still not sure if it is all to the good. So much is organized for the kids over the past 15 years, they have so little time to just go out and kick or shoot the ball around. That's the fun thing. So many dads dream of the big paycheck provided by an athletic kid. So few cash in...
