Hitachi Predicts 3D Hard Disks by Year's End. daria42 writes "Hitachi has announced that its perpendicular, or 3D, hard disks should be out by the end of 2005." From the article: "Today, hard drives record and store data in a longitudinal fashion, with the read/write heads scanning over a horizontal plane. In perpendicular recording, data bits are aligned vertically, allowing for more data to be squeezed into a finite area. Put another way, data will go from being stored on a two-dimensional XY grid to living in a three-dimensional XYZ space." [Slashdot]
There still is innovation in the computer industry. I've got to learn how they do this. By the way, if you don't know about Slashdot, it was the original blogger community. It has some cool T-shirts and coffee mugs in the Slashdot store, too.

Drug Makers Race to Cash In on Fight Against Fat. From pharmaceutical giants to tiny start-ups, the industry is spending billions of dollars developing obesity drugs. By By STEPHANIE SAUL. [NYT > Health]
Ah, yes, people always seem to be looking for the magic pill. I've seen ads for a cholesterol pill telling people that they should be able to eat whatever they want and pay no consequences. Twenty years ago or so there was a comic strip called Bloom County. Opus the Penguin was always falling for the latest fad. Milo was the voice of common sense. Opus is looking one day for a magic cure. Milo says, "Eat less and exercise more." Opus tries something else. Milo repeats.
Making tough choices is part of life, whether business or personal.
