I spent the entire weekend assigning soccer referees to all the various leagues I'm responsible for--so no blogging. Drove up to Chicago yesterday, and I'm not at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort for the Matrikon users conference. Probably some news today from here. Next week, it's a short drive to Cincinnati for the Industry Advisory Board meeting of the Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems. I love the work that consortium of universities, suppliers and end users is doing. I'll make a short side stop over at Advantech on the way. There should be some interesting news from that next week.

The Siemens acquisition of UGS has closed. The company will henceforth be known as UGS PLM Software, a global division of Siemens Automation and Drives Group--or most likely as UGS. Siemens has sent some of its people over to run the organization. Tilo Brandis is now president. He most recently has headed the Electronics Assembly Systems Division. Peter Bichara is now executive vice president and chief financial officer. He has been vice president of mergers and acquisitions for Siemens A&D. Much of the rest of the UGS senior management team will stay.
There has been conceptual talk of "digital manufacturing" for several years. If Siemens continues its recent trend of good integration of acquired properties, then this acquisition will be a huge stride forward of the concept. It will also put pressure on Rockwell Automation to re-invigorate its on-and-off work with a PLM supplier--most likely Dassault Systemmes. These could be interesting times for further digital integration of manufacturing. And if the results are as good as I'm starting to hear about other software integration (for example MES with plant systems and ERP), then manufacturing will be stronger.
