I was just reading through the latest Business Week and its "in" supplement (inside innovation). Very interesting article about how overuse of Six Sigma methodology at 3M could have stifled the innovation that the company was famous for. It makes a lot of sense. As a student of ancient philosophy, I embrace the concepts of moderation and balance. Adopting a single methodology or idea as your "god" is really a recipe for long term failure. I learned how to cut costs in manufacturing in 1972. I also knew way back then, that, although I could cut costs in any company, I wouldn't want to be around in four years. Sounds like the new CEO is less focused on one "god" but a balance of Six Sigma where it works and creativity where it is needed.

OPC Unified Architecture specification is moving into the implementation stage. We've written a couple of articles about it at Automation World. This specification moves OPC into the modern Web technology world and will be a significant security advancement among other things.

If you develop products using OPC or you are an OPC user who wants to get the most out of this interoperability communication technology, a great place to start is the Developers' Conference that will be held in Scottsdale (Phoenix), Arizona June 25-28. The cost is $1195 which includes room, meals, entertainment and conference fee.
