Emergency: Let people know you're okay with the Safe and Well List. 
The Red Cross has put together a site for those who have been affected by a disaster to notify friends and family that they are okay:
Concerned family and friends can search the list of those who have registered themselves as "safe and well." The results of a successful search will display a loved one's First Name, Last Name, an "As of Date", and the "safe and well" messages selected.
Hopefully you'll never have cause to use this, but it's a good resource to keep in mind, just in case.
