Amit asks the important question for managers planning their business strategies around the "M2M" market--or Smart services as Harbor Research once called it. I also had a couple of people asking me about M2M at the ISA Expo a couple of weeks ago.

I keep having trouble with the M2M concept because it seems to emphasize only cellular technology for its broadband. So, if you take out the specific technology for broadband, then I think the smart services market potential is huge. Why do I say that? I just finished interviewing several people for my November Automation World article on remote monitoring and diagnostics and discovered automation companies embedding technology in products that they can monitor remotely over the Inernet. With these monitoring setups, they can assist customers with problems with the company's products on site--one of the premises of smart services. The supplier companies can even go further and help troubleshoot processes, too. And, they are able to sell support services to do this.

Some research I've seen in the past extrapolated the number of devices in the field and projected a potential market from that. Well, not all devices are ever going to be connected to the Internet period. But with the larger companies quietly this deep into the application, the potential must be big. Something I learned from my research so far with applicability to machine builders--a big target market for smart services technology--is that the most important people to get into conversation early are the IT people. With them, there is only one conversation--security.

Amit's company, Moblize, has also released a new product, Kanak 3.0, a software application that provides a "complete picture" of offshore or onshore drilling and production sites. It aggregates data from multiple individual applications such as SCADA, well loggers, PLCs, RTUs and EFMs simultaneously with delivery to any third-party surveillance and decision support application.

Real Market vs. Perceived market of m2m. Hello readers

I was asked a very intriguing question today during one of the meetings which i wanted to pose to the entire community.

We hear a lot about M2M/smart services being billions of dollar market in 2011. However, what is actual market share today and the market share split amongst M2M vendors? Any ideas?

Peggy, Mike i am guessing you may have answers to this?

Cheers and looking forward to some feedback
